American Foxhound

The striking conformation of an American Foxhound bears a striking resemblance to the body build of a Beagle. The dog measures from 21 to 25 inches at the withers and weighs from 65 to 75 pounds. This breed’s sleek athletic body is well covered with a short coat that ranges from black, tan and white, tan and white or red and white color combinations. Well boned, straight and long legs give this breed its legendary speed.

The American Foxhound is believed to be in existence in the Crown Colony – long before it was given the name America. The American Foxhound breedhave evolved from the hunting dogs brought by Robert Brooke to the Crown Colony in 1650.

In Great Britain, these dogs were highly acclaimed for their excellent hunting abilities. The dogs were used by the British landed gentry to hunt foxes. In a fox hunt, hunters on horseback follow packs of American Foxhounds. The deep and booming melodious voice will distinctly change to alert the hunters when a prey is found. New World settlers utilize the dog in the same manner. Because of the ferocious nature, the dogs are believed to have been used by the English military commanders to track Indians.

The American Foxhound was developed from the crossing of English hounds with the dogs of settlers from Ireland and France. The American Foxhound, a versatile breed of dog was born.

An American Foxhound is basically a hunting dog. These dogs would be happiest if they are hunting. This breed is equipped with a sensitive scenting ability, strength and stamina and a strong prey drive. An American Foxhound is an intense hunter, once a prey is sighted, the dog will not stop until the animal is taken. Breed name suggests that the dog is a fox hunter but American Foxhounds hunt other animals as well.That the dog will be highly valued by hunter is a given fact.

The breed’s excellent hunting prowess is basically the reason why these dogs are highly valued. Although the dogs exhibit a courageous and tenacious temperament when hunting, American Foxhounds have a sweet and gentle personality. American Foxhounds have gained a reputation for being courageous and tenacious hunters but in the company of its human family the dogs turn into gentle well mannered companions. An American Foxhound gives its loyalty and friendship not only to one person. An American Foxhound loves all the members of the family but the dogs are noted to be especially friendly and affectionate with the children.
