In the early 1600s, a spitz type breed was developed – the Norrbottenspets. The Norrbottenspets was also given the name Nordic Spitz and Pohjanpystykorva in the country where it has originated. This breed was made the national dog of Sweden. Highly valued for its great endurance, this breed was claimed by Sweden and Finland as their own. A Norrbottenspets is really a small dog but it has a compact, well muscled body.

Close fitting soft and very thick fur covers the dog’s square shaped body. The dog is insulated from very hot or cold weather by the white fur with red and brown markings. The dog’s appearance is made more impressive by the bushy tail that loosely curls over the back of the dog.

This dog breed was purposely developed to be an all around farm dog but it has evolved into an outstanding hunting dog as well. A Norrbottenspets is not really a large breed but the remarkable courage and cunning personality makes the dog an excellent hunter. Apart from the high level of intelligence, the dog is also eager to please its people thus training geared to improve the inborn hunting abilities will never be an owner’s problem .

Unlike other breeds of hounds that that have the tendency to specialize either as a scent or sight hunters, a Norrbottenspets uses both senses making this breed an outstanding hunter. The dog does not have a foxy appearance but it is described so because it exhibits its cunning nature when hunting. Immediately after the dog is released in the hunting area, it will start to flush out game. Rapid barking is not only a sign that a game is found but also masks the sound made by the approaching hunter.

This rather small dog has a big personality. This breed would make a suitable choice for mature people wanting to have a pet that will provide them with companionship and security. A Norrbottenspets dog forms a strong bond with its family because it is full of life, very energetic and has a playful personality as well. Because of these qualities, the dog can take part in all the activities of the family.

The breed was in fact named as one the 10 top breeds acclaimed for their gentleness with children. This loving and kind dog would show a stable temperament even when faced with new situations. Most dogs will react aggressively if teased or pestered by children but not this breed . A Norrbottenspets is a healthy breed thus the family would be assured of about 20 years of security and com-panionship.
