Although barking is a completely normal behaviour for dogs, it can get excessive. Carla, mother of two, has a big German Shepherd named Bronco. When Bronco sees the neighbour’s cats in the garden, he goes barking wild. Something drastic had to be done. Carla asked her friends who had similarly big dogs. She was told to look into shock collars.

A natural habit of dogs, barking, is at odds with many living conditions we have to put up with. These include no bark ordinances. You will be fined should you violate these ordinances. Add to that the stress owners experience when their dogs won’t shush. That creates tensions between neighbours. Carla decided Bronco needed a dog training device that produced quick results in as little time as possible. As a mother of two, and with full-time work, she doesn’t have much time to spend on training Bronco.

Shock collars are among the popular types of no bark collars; the others are spray and ultrasonic. The last two kinds release a chemical spray and a high-pitched sound, respectively. The sound emitted is beyond a person’s hearing range, but well within a dog’s. The no bark types trigger when your dog lets of a loud bark. To discriminate between a bark and any other loud sound in the environment, high quality collars are activated by both the bark and vibrations from the dog’s throat.

Carla seemed to like the shock collar, for good reason. The mild electric shock is just enough discomfort to interrupt the dog’s barking, but not enough to harm it. When she thought about it, she wanted a collar her big playful dog couldn’t break or shake loose. So she searched online for waterproof units whose dials and buttons a dog would have difficulty messing up with.

The shock collar, to Carla’s relief, allows for the amping up of the intensity level of the electric shock; just in case Bronco adapts to the stimulus and barks despite it. Nowadays, Carla enjoys a lot of quiet time at home – thanks to her wise decision to look into shock collars. Bronco’s present no-barking behaviour is getting him more attention compared to his previous behaviour.
