For quite some time, guiding-eye dogs for the blind were almost the only type of assistance canine around. Over the last thirty years, the field has increased considerably .

Many canines even accomodate a new sought after type of treatment for the clinically depressed, children that are underprivileged and even inmates in correctional facilities.   These dogs are given their own sofa dog bed and sanctioned to abide with convicts in cells.  These therapy dogs have emerged provent to be very successful in how they connect with people on the road to any rehabilitation . 

From the beginning, there is a careful process of breed selection.  Many breeds tend to be more useful than others.  Through painstaking selection the roles of certain breeds can be determined .  Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, and a few others are recommended both for temperament and intelligence .  

Even inside some individual breeds of canines some are more responsive to education than others. After a year of in-house instruction and much needed socializing with a person who also receives unique   instruction , the canine graduates to the next grade. Then, depending on the anticipated role, they receive an additional two months to two years of accelerated , unique training with specifically trained professionals.

Canines in these training programs encounter everything from the simplest bark to alert the deaf to a door knock, to even gathering containers of food or drink on command .  These well instructed dogs can even open doors for those in need, and of course provide vision based information to the sightless. 

A guiding-eyes guide dog can steer their blind companion around and through obstacles on the street. The hearing-guide dog can alert and guide their companion away from an oncoming rescue vehicle or fire truck. The wheelchair assistant can guide the resident off the floor when required or even into bed at night.

These unparalleled animals are trained to stay focused in small or large groups of people and even handle varying weather and environments. Many go to populated areas where they’re trained to distinguish a curb as a boundary. Others find homes in non-populated areas where they are tutored that turning on a garden hose is more essential than chasing a squirrel or occasional bird from the property.  

Besides the conventional sit, stay, or come, these working dogs can even turn on or off lamps , change the volume on the stereo , and bring bags containing vitamins .  Many dogs have even conquered how to deliver a cup of water without spilling to a paraplegic. Unbelievably, some are even taught to recognize and react to heart attacks and strokes and call 911! 

With this capacity to learn and retain many requests it takes months of devoted focus by both instructor and dog . These trainers instructors and canines portray patience beyond what most people   possess required to instruct even the most willing students. 

All canines learn by definite cues and repetition. Though they can learn to distinguish sounds and grasp basic meanings, they dont possess even the three-year old humans understanding of language. teaching these dogs to associate the sound of water with fetch me a cup is much more toilsome than for even the average toddler. 

Yet these amazing animals, with the instruction of their talented and dedicated trainers, learn to carry out a plethora of behavioral tendencies well beyond their peers. If you ever notice one accompanying its instructor   or partner, respect the sign they hold that says Working dog, please don’t distract. 

Just give a earnest bow of respect to these hard-working dogs and the dedicated special people who train them.
