Maybe your beloved dog has intestinal worms? Reading this article, one would surmise you’re worried – it may really be that your dog has intestinal worms, only that you didn’t’ notice.
This article lists and discusses some methods for you to use, to find out if your dog is indeed infected intestinal worms.
Does your dog have whipworms – check its poop
If you didn’t’ know, whipworm eggs can find their way into poop and in dirt.
Detecting whipworms remains difficult, though.
They do cause health problems in your dog which you can detect – diarrhea that keeps coming back (could be bloody), loss of weight, anemia, an inflamed large intestine (colitis, not easy to detect unless you’re trained). Check your dog’s poop for blood and whipworms eggs. Since the eggs may not appear every time, it’s best to take your dog to the vet to get examined.
Does your dog have roundworms – unhealthy physical signs, clues in the poop
Dogs infected with roundworms, including puppies, may show these signs – diarrhea and vomiting – and would usually have that bloated belly that doesn’t look healthy.
Roundworms can pass into your dog’s poop – two to four inches of spaghetti-like look; they’re white, too. Hard to miss. Roundworms aren’t life-threatening, but do cause your dog discomfort. Have your dog checked up in case the unhealthy appearance can be a sign of something else.
How about hookworms – diarrhea, rashes on their feet, and some other signs
Hookworms can lead to your dog’s having itchy feet, or a rash on its feet, some wheezing and coughing, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and of course, black or bloody poop. Supposing your dog is infected and not treated for hookworms, its dying by anemia is the least of your worries.
Pups are especially defenseless. Hookworms are tough to find, even in poop, so do consult your vet.
Does your dog have tapeworms – abdominal discomfort, itching on the anus spot, and other signs
If your dog has tapeworm, then some segments of that worm may be found in the poop.
How do these worms look? Small grains of rice, uncooked rice. They would be small, flat, and wide.
One other sign is when your dog has to have its behind rubbing against the floor – that’s hard to miss, too.
Tapeworms cause the anal area of the infected dog to be itchy.
Deworming your dog and pet health – take your vet’s advice seriously
Worm treatment must be repeated over and over until every dormant and live larvae and all the eggs die.
Of course, you administer this only under your vet’s supervision following a deworming program that’s prescribed – the dewormer must fit your dog’s weight and how bad the infection is.
