Dog Repellant vs Mace

When looking at a comparison of  dog repellent spray   and pepper spray  and how to use them   in a personal defense kit, there are two main issues to keep in mind  .  One is the physical   difference between the products – and they are very different- and the other is the legal problem   about what will happen if you use  dog spray  on a person who attacks you  .

In Canada all products with a label containing the words pepper spray, mace, etc, indicating that is has been manufactured for use on humans are classified as a prohibited weapon.  Only police officers and those with specific official permits are allowed to legally carry or possess pepper spray.  Any similar canister with the labels reading “dog spray or bear spray is regulated under the Pest Control Products Act.  While it’s legal and can be carried by regular consumers , it is against the law if using it causes ‘a risk of imminent death or serious bodily harm to another person’ or environmental harm and you could receive a fine of $500,000 and jail time of maximum 3 years. But , the legality of using spray manufactured as an animal deterrent on a person would be decided in court, on a case-by-case basis .

What else is different  when comparing Dog spray  and Pepper Spray.  Well, one major difference is the comparative strength of the products . Animal repellent spray is produced to be about 0.5% Capsaicin, while pepper spray made to be used on our two legged predators starts at about 5% strength- that ‘s 10x stronger .  That primarily impacts the length of time that the dog will be affected.  Because canine eyes don’t make tears, dog spray is made  to not result in long term damage a  dogs vision.  Also , at about 2 millions SHU (Scoville heat units) animal repellent spray is not as burning as pepper spray used for defense against people .  Having said that , I absolutely wouldn’t want to get a face full of dog spray because while it would not put someone down like the defense sprays available in the United States , it would be exceptionally unpleasant.

In Canada, pepper sprays, stunguns and tasers are illegal , but a good Self Defense Kit for Canada can have a cannister of dog strength pepper spray – because we’ll at least have some protection from mad dogs and everyone should have a nice ear piercing safety alarm.  A good personal alarm can be used to protect you , your purse or whatever you’re carrying and also can be attached to a door or window and used as a room alarm in a motel or maybe a college dorm if someone is feeling unsafe .
