Why do dogs love to eat paper

Dog owners would always be heard complaining about the unwanted habits of the pet – eating papers is one of them. Why do dogs love eating paper? Dogs are renowned for their excellent scenting abilities and these animals have also gained a reputation for being voracious eaters. It would be understandable if the paper eaten has traces of food on it.

A dog will certainly not pass up the chance to eat a hamburger wrapper or a pizza box because it would have the mouth watering aroma of food. But a toilet paper – .a newspaper or a book? OMG! Dogs really do have the propensity to develop weird behaviors. Dogs are very curious animals and the sound of tearing paper would be very interesting to these animals. A pet owner cannot be blamed for relegating the dog to the kennel outdoors if the pet has decided to have for breakfast the report the master has been working on the whole night.

What will happen to a dog that is left alone at home all day? No toys and no one to play with will result to a bored dog and a bored can be equated to destruction. The telephone book, a newspaper lying on the table or even the toilet paper in the bathroom would catch the dog’s attention. Dogs have the inclination to chew and the texture of papers as well as exciting tearing sound will be very attractive to a playful dog. Being curious of their environment, puppies would use the mouth to learn about its new world and papers are one of the things chewed and eaten. Eating paper and other things will be noticed in teething puppies as chewing is believed to soothe sore gums.

A dog that has the habit of eating papers may have an undiagnosed medical concern. The habit of eating papers is usually associated to the behavioral problems of the dog. However, the unacceptable behavior of eating papers may not be caused by the dog’s behavioral problems rather it can be an indication that the dog has anemia or gastro intestinal disorder. A dog may eat papers in an effort to deal with the malabsorptive and maldigestive disorders.

Eating paper similar to the ingestion of other non-food items will be dangerous for the health of the dog. The papers ingested by the dog should come out the normal way. If this does not happen, the dog will be in for some serious medical concern and the pet owner would also have to face hefty medical bills if the dog has to have surgery.
