Is your dog in the habit of pursuing moving objects and people? This could cause problems both for those being chased and your dog. For instance, if your dog chases a child, this could lead to injury to the child. So, keeping your dog from chasing moving objects is an essential part of his early training. It’s in the nature of a dog to chase since they are carnivorous by nature. This chasing instinct has been utilized by humans to put dogs to work, herding sheep, cattle, and other animals. But even with these breeds, training is still required to call the dog off when necessary. This type of training, like most training, should be done while the dog is very young.
A perfect area to proceed with this training is in a yard surrounded by fencing. By doing this you will keep your dog’s attention focused on you and not on outside influences. Prior to starting this training, also remove any balls or dog toys that may distract your dog.
Put your dog on a lead and stand with him beside you. In this training, the next step is to present a ball to your dog, without letting him come into physical contact with it. Take the ball, and throw it and distance from you and your dog, and yell ‘off’, in a loud voice.When your dog tries to chase the ball, keep him restrained and then say the command again.’ This will need to be repeated until the dog obeys the command.
Whenever he obeys the command give him a treat as a reward. Subsequent to the time when your dog has learned to obey in your fenced in yard, attempt to repeat this same procedure in an area that has more distractions. Now, that your dog has learned to obey in different settings, return to the original setting, this time with no leash attached. As always, when your dog obeys, give him positive reinforcement in the form of a reward. Then, without an attached lead, perform the same training in different settings.
Remember, don’t release the dog from the leash, until you have first taught him not to chase.
Following this simple training exercise will tech your dog not to chase things. This training will prevent you from having to worry about the possible adverse effects associated with your dog chasing after a person or car. It could also save you from the penalties of his chasing, which could be anything from embarrassment to legal proceedings in the event of an accident caused by your dog.
