When Is It Time For Pet Euthanasia

An extremely difficult and painful time for most pet owners is when to consider pet euthanasia. There is not a correct way to decide but there are some questions to consider. Here is some brief information on what to expect when the time comes.

Consider the current quality of life your pet has. Are they still eating and drinking or have the stopped. How many good days do they have compared to the number of bad days. Consult your veterinarian for their opinion and ask if your pet will get better or will they continue to suffer. If you decide to euthanize, then call and make the appointment for as soon as possible.

When you speak with the receptionist, let them know you have not had to go through this before. Make your appointment for either the first slot in the morning or the last. Also, ask that it be scheduled for a time when the veterinarian will not be busy with surgery.

When you arrive, you can ask the receptionist to phone you while you wait in the car with your pet. Once you enter the exam room, there should not be a long wait. Do not be embarrassed or afraid to be emotional. The staff may have performed the procedure several times but it is always a sad time for everyone.

Your veterinarian may sedate your pet before administering the euthanasia solution. This only takes place because the solution has be applied intravenously in order to act quickly and painlessly. If you want, you will be able to hold your pet during the process. A few seconds after the solution has been administered, your pet will take a deep breath then seem to fall asleep. They will probably take a few more breaths then stop all movement. If you want a few moments alone with your pet, do not be afraid to ask for it.

When planning to take the deceased home for burial, there will be a container prepared for the body. The veterinarian will usually place the pet and carry the container to the car for the owner. When arrangements have been made for cremation you will be notified when to pick up the ashes.

When you have to consider pet euthanasia consider the quality of your pets life. If they are ill, will they recover or will they suffer and have only bad days. You should always ask any questions that arise and be treated with respect and courtesy.
