As you may recall, discoid lupus results in a discolored nose. As the disease gets worse, your dog may develop scaling of nasal tissue and sores. Dogs suffering from this disease also develop a smooth nose. A healthy dog’s nose will have a cobblestoned texture. Although nasal sores will bother some dogs, others won’t be bothered by them at all.

Some of the same symptoms caused by discoid lupus are caused by various other conditions. Two of these conditions include dermatitis and ringworm. A tissue biopsy of the affected area is needed to diagnose this disease definitively.

Treatment of this condition will depend on how advanced it is. If your dog has a relatively mild case, he may be cured using a strong, topical ointment. Severe cases of discoid lupus have to be treated with corticosteroids. It may also be useful to supplement your dog’s diet with vitamin E. It will take months for you to notice the effects of vitamin E supplements though.
